New Poverty Data Reveals Progress but Many Oklahomans "Left Off the Boat" of Economic Prosperity

August 25th, 2008 | Published in:

New U.S. Census Bureau data revealed a drop in Oklahoma's poverty rate in 2007 - from 17.0% to 15.9% - and a significant increase in median household income. While this showed that Oklahoma's strong economy was finally providing benefits to low- and moderate-income families, Oklahoma's poverty rate remained well above the national average and above the rate at the peak of the last economic cycle in 2000.

OK Policy issued a press release responding to the Census Bureau report, which also included data on the uninsured. In addition, we released a new 2-page fact sheet, Oklahoma's Poverty Profile: 2007, hi-liting some of the data on the face of poverty in Oklahoma. You can read and download both the press relese and the fact sheet in PDF.
